Are 1/4'' wheel spacers on stock lug bolts safe?

I'd like to stick my tires on my truck (2001 silverado) out a little, but only 1/4''. I've read from a couple of places that at that small amount they are still safe. It's not a huge amount, so I was wondering if it would be ok with my stock lug bolts. (I have stock rims by the way, just bigger tires.)
