Bathing a three day old (first baby)?

He has his umbilical cord still. This is my first day home from the hospital and they washed him in the hospital but the doctors said i was able to give him a bath if i wanted but don't submerge him in water below the waist. So, if i give him a bath with a cloth, do i wash around his umbilical cord or just avoid the area all together?
